Physical symptoms of depression

There are many features of depression that are intensely physical by nature. Many of these physical symptoms of depression are similar to symptoms that are seen in diseases that have some identifiable physical cause. Some of these symtoms may be aches and pains, constipation, weight loss, tiredness, loss of interest in sex, loss of appetite and many others. It can be difficult to tell which symptoms are stemming from depression and which symptoms suggest a different disorder that requires a different treatment.

Mental illness has not come to be widely accepted by society in general even to this day. People may find it unacceptable to be psychologically ill. Therefore, physical symptoms of depression are often used as substitutions for psychological ones, especially the more minor mood variations. Many patients feel that their doctors are trained to respond to complaints that are triggered by common bodily functions. They, therefore, present these complaints unconsciously to their physicians.

Many common physical complains may have psychological contributions. Headaches can worsen by an increase in muscular tension of the scalp and neck muscles. These happen to be a physical accompaniment for an anxious state. When depression is most severe, some physical symptoms of depression such as constipation and slowness may be present. The depressed patient can worry so much about their physical state that they think they are ill when, in fact, they are really not.

For example, a 25 year-old man who is diagnosed with depression may not have the same kind of symptoms as a man who is 70 years old. For some people the symptoms are so bad that it is obvious that something is wrong. Other people may feel unhappy or miserable all over without really knowing why.
